Edinburgh West UK Parliament constituency - Politics and history of the constituency
This commuter belt, distinctively in the city, had been a safe Unionist/Conservative seat for 60 years until their Scottish wipeout in 1997.
The Liberal Democrat party opposes the first-past-the-post voting system as unfair, for giving no representation to any other votes than those for the highest polling party in a seat, and for not reflecting nationally in the number of seats won the true national levels of support for each party. Yet, in the 2005 election, present MP Barrett's campaign used the present voting system in the party's favour, repeatedly pressing voters in leaflets every couple of days with mathematical claims that no other party than these 2 could win the seat, hence they must vote for him whether they were satisfied with him and his party or not.
