"Well time is Like a DC-10, it's amazing how it flies, you'll soon have all forgotten me and my orchestrated litany of lies" McPhail and Gadsby, as the "McMurdo sounds". The crash of flight TE901 remains New Zealand's deadliest disaster followed closely by the Napier earthquake. The small size of New Zealand meant that nearly the entire population was affected by the disaster, personally or by association. A wooden cross was erected above Scott Base to commemorate the accident. It was replaced in 1986 with an aluminium cross ...

Air New Zealand: Encyclopedia II - Low-cost carrier - No-frills transatlantic flights

The first airline offering no-frills transatlantic service was Freddie Laker's Laker Airways, which operated its famous "Skytrain" service between London and New York City during the late 1970s. The service was suspended after Laker's competitors, British Airways and Pan Am, were able to price Skytrain out of the market. In 2004 the Irish company Aer Lingus lowered its prices to compete with companies such as Ryanair and also started offering no-frills transatlantic flights for just above €100. Late in 2004 the Canadian airline Zoom Airlines also started selling transatlant ...

Air New Zealand: Encyclopedia II - Virgin Blue - Trivia

Virgin Blue's name was the result of an open competition; the predominately red livery is due to the Australian slang tradition of calling a red-head male 'Blue' or 'Bluey'. Like "big brother" Virgin Atlantic, Virgin Blue gives its planes imaginative and amusing names. Each aircraft also features a "virgin girl" as nose art, complete with a wide-brimmed Aussie hat, trailing an Australian flag. The airline encourages its staff to prese ...
