AROMATHERAPY: Aromatherapy is a unique branch of herbal medicine that utilizes the medicinal properties found in the essential oils of various plants.

Through a process of steam distillation or cold-pressing, the volatile constituents of the plant's oil (its essence) are extracted from its flowers, leaves, branches or roots.

According to Dr. (rer. nat.) Kurt Schnaubelt, Director of the Pacific Institute of Aromatherapy, the term "aromatherapy" is somewhat misleading, as it can suggest an exclusive role for the aroma in the healing process. "In actuality," says Dr. Schnaubelt, "the oils exert much of their therapeutic effect through their pharmacological properties and their small molecular size, making them one of the few therapeutic agents to easily penetrate bodily tissues."

holiday aromatherapy: Adaptation of aromatherapy to holiday time. It involves the use of scents associated with such a season (e.g., Christmassy scents such as of frankincense, myrrh, and pine).

Aromatherapy, Flower Remedies

Relatively new to this country, this technique was used in ancient Egypt and other cultures. It involves specialized knowledge of how various essences affect the body and psyche by purportedly altering brain activity. Often combined with massage or esthetics, or used alone, various essences are claimed to be able to affect many physical ailments.

magical aromatherapy: Offshoot of aromatherapy expounded by author Scott Cunningham (1956-1993) and distinguished by the following attributes.

(a)           Self-administration is preferable.

(b)           Aims need not relate to health.

(d)           Bioelectrical energy, which Cunningham described as non-physical and natural, merges with the scent and is programmable by visualization.

Aromatherapy

Aromatic oils from plants are used on the skin, inhaled, or mixed into bathwater. Specific oils, or combinations of oils, are employed to give specific effects such as calming, pain relief, or energizing.

Essential Oils

Essential oils are liquids extracted (normally by steam or water distillation) from the flowers, leaves, stems, bark or roots of a plant. Essential oils contain the highly concentrated "essence" of the plant it was derived from.

Essential oils are believed to offer psychological and physical therapeutic benefits. These benefits are usually achieved through methods including inhalation and application of the diluted oil to the skin. The theraputic use of essential oils is covered by the wider term of Aromatherapy.
