Berkeley ("Berke") Breathed (last name rhymes with "method") (born June 21, 1957) is a cartoonist, children's book author/illustrator, director and screenwriter, best known for Bloom County, a 1980s cartoon-comic strip which dealt with socio-political issues, as seen through the eyes of highly exaggerated characters (e.g. Bill the Cat and Opus the Penguin) and humorous analogies. Berkeley Breathed - Early life. Breathed was born on June 21, 1957, in Encino, California. He went to Westchester High Sch ...

Berkeley Breathed: Encyclopedia II - Berkeley Breathed - Cartooning career

His first regularly published strip was Academia Waltz which appeared in the Daily Texan in 1978. The strip attracted the editors of the Washington Post who recruited him to do a nationally syndicated strip. On December 8, 1980, Bloom County made its debut, and featured some of the characters from Academia Waltz including former frat-boy Steve Dallas and the paralyzed Vietnam war veteran Cutter John. In the beginning, the strip's style was so close to that of another popular strip, Doonesbury, that creator Garry Trudeau wrot ...

Berkeley Breathed: Encyclopedia - Calvin and Hobbes

Calvin and Hobbes is a comic strip written and illustrated by Bill Watterson, following the humorous antics of Calvin, an imaginative six-year-old boy, and Hobbes, his energetic and sardonic—albeit stuffed—tiger. Syndicated from November 18th, 1985 until December 31st, 1995, at its height Calvin and Hobbes was carried by over 2,400 newspapers worldwide. To date, more than 30 million copies ...

Berkeley Breathed: Encyclopedia - Briefs

Briefs are a type of Y-shaped men's underwear and swimwear. Unlike boxer shorts, briefs hold the user's genitals in a relatively fixed position. This fact makes briefs a popular underwear choice for men who are participating in athletic activities or who feel they need more support than loose-fitting underwear can provide. Briefs were first sold on 19 January 1935 by Coopers, Inc., in Chicago, Illinois. They dubbed the new undergarment the ...

Berkeley Breathed: Encyclopedia II - Outland comic - Overview

On September 3, 1989, a month after retiring Bloom County, Breathed began his second syndicated strip with a minor character from the previous strip. Ronald-Ann Smith, a little girl from the "wrong side of the tracks" in Bloom County, entered a magic doorway in a grimy alley that looked down into a cheery world of "cotton-candy trees" known as the Outland (the ground of her world did not sync up with that of Outland, so the door originally ap ...

Opus comic strip - Current core characters. Opus is the title character and protagonist of the strip. Though he returned to Antarctica at the end of Outland, Opus has since traveled back home to Bloom County, only to find that time has changed everything and everyone he once held dear. Bill the Cat was the first friend that Opus was reunited with. Remarkably, Bill was the only one who had not changed during Opus' eight years in Antarctica, having retained his signatu ...

Berkeley Breathed: Encyclopedia II - Ozy and Millie - Characters

Ozy, a gray fox, usually plays the "straight person," serenely accepting his place "in the eye of the storm." And he has a lot of storm to contend with. His friend Millicent "Millie" Mudd, a Red Fox, spends most of her time making life difficult for others and loves finding new ways of making a mess of things. Ozy's adoptive dragon father Llewellyn is perhaps the oddest of the bunch, being involved in everything from running for President under the Zen Party (he "campaigns by not campaigning") to playing the incomprehens ...

Berkeley Breathed: Encyclopedia II - Calvin and Hobbes - Recurring subject matter

There are several repeating themes in the work, a few involving Calvin's real life, and many stemming from his incredible imagination. Some of the latter are clearly flights of fancy, while others, like Hobbes, are of an apparently dual nature and don't quite work when presumed real or unreal. Calvin and Hobbes - Calvin's alter-egos. Calvin's hyperactive imagination leads him to imagine himself as other characters with different powers and goals, sometimes vanishing into a fantasy to escape a diffic ...

Berkeley Breathed: Encyclopedia II - National Radical Meadow Party - The 1984 Election

Initially, the Meadow Party was unsure of who to nominate for the 1984 ticket. Early suggestions included Mr. Spock, John Glenn, and Erik Estrada. Portnoy later remarked that the party should have nominated Jesse Jackson and Jesse Helms for the ticket ("Let's alienate everybody!"). At caucus time, the party nominated Bloom County resident Limekiller for the office of president, and the reluctant Opus the penguin for the office of vice president. However, the choice of Limekiller for the Oval Office turned out to be a short-live ...

Berkeley Breathed: Encyclopedia II - Calvin and Hobbes - History

Calvin and Hobbes was first conceived when Watterson, having worked in an advertising job he detested, began devoting his spare time to cartooning, his true love. He explored various strip ideas but all were rejected by the syndicates to which he sent them. However, he did receive a positive response on one strip, which featured a side character (the main character's little brother) who had a stuffed tiger. Told that these characters were the strongest, Watterson began a new strip centered around them. The syndicate (United Features S ...

Berkeley Breathed: Encyclopedia II - Cat - Characteristics

Cat - Physical. Cats typically weigh between 2.5 and 7 kg (5.5–16 lb); however, some breeds, such as the Maine Coon can exceed 11.3 kg (25 pounds). Some have been known to reach up to 23 kg (50 lb), due to overfeeding. This is very unhealthy for the cat, and should be prevented through diet and exercise (playing), especially for cats living exclusively indoors. In captivity, indoor cats typically live 15 to 20 years, though the oldest-known cat lived to age 36.See also:

Berkeley Breathed: Encyclopedia II - Heavy metal umlaut - Umlauts and diaereses

The German word Umlaut roughly means changed sound, as it is composed of um- (a prefix often used with verbs involving "change") and Laut, here meaning "sound". Adding an umlaut indeed changes the pronunciation of a vowel in standard (non-heavy metal) usage; the letters u and ü represent distinct sounds, as do o vs. ö and a vs. ä. Umlauts, or visually similar graphemes, are used in several languages, such as Icelandic, German, Swedish, Finnish, Estonian, Hungarian, Azer ...

Berkeley Breathed: Encyclopedia II - Heavy metal umlaut - History

The progressive rock band Amon Düül II (aka Amon Duul II) released their first album in 1969. However, their name came from "Amon an Egyptian sun god and Düül a character from Turkish fiction" [2], so this use of diaereses was not gratuitous. The third part of Yes's progressive rock epic "Starship Trooper" is entitled "Würm" (on The Yes Album, released 1971). However, this again is probably not gratuitou ...

The books, labeled "Collections," form a complete archive of the newspaper strips, except for a single daily strip from November 28, 1985. The alternate strip, a joke about Hobbes taking a bath in the washing machine, has circulated around the internet.) "Treasuries" usually combine the two preceding collections with ...

Berkeley Breathed: Encyclopedia II - Heavy metal umlaut - The gratuitous umlaut in other popular literature

The 1974 film Blazing Saddles included Madeline Kahn's German-accented Marlene Dietrich-style chanteuse character "Lili Von Shtupp" (according in the credits). She is announced on a poster outside the music hall as "Lili von Shtüpp"; the film's characters pronounce the name without any change to the vowel. In the mid-1980s, cartoonist Berkeley Breathed parodied the heavy metal umlaut in the comic strip Bloom County with the fictional group Deathtöngue, fronted by the depraved and unwholesome singer/'lead tongue' "Wild" Bill C ...

Berkeley Breathed: Encyclopedia II - Cat - Reproduction and genetics

Cats are seasonally polyestrous, which means they may have many heat periods over the course of a year. A heat period lasts about 4 to 7 days if the female is bred; if she is not, the heat period lasts longer and recurs at regular intervals. The male cat's penis has spines which point backwards. Upon withdrawal of the penis, the spines rake the walls of the female's vagina. The female needs this stimulation for ovulation to begin. Because of this, females are rarely impregnated by the first male with which they mate. Furthermore, cats ...

Berkeley Breathed: Encyclopedia II - Calvin and Hobbes - Style and Influences

Calvin and Hobbes strips are characterized by sparse but careful draftsmanship, intelligent humor, poignant observations, witty social and political commentary, and well-developed characters that are full of personality. Precedents to Calvin's fantasy world can be found in Charles M. Schulz's Peanuts, Percy Crosby's Skippy, Berkeley Breathed's Bloom County, and George Herriman's Krazy Kat, while Watterson's use of comics as sociopolitical commentary reaches back to Walt Kelly's Pogo. Schulz and Kelly in particular influenced Watterson's out ...
