| | | | | Fairy: Encyclopedia II - Efteling - HistoryEfteling 'officially' opened on May 31st, 1952, when the Fairy Tale Forest (het Sprookjesbos), designed by the famous Dutch illustrator Anton Pieck, was declared open. Initially, the Fairy Tale Forest was home to some ten different fairy tales. All of them were brought to life based on original drawings by Anton Pieck, and very ingenious movement-, lighting- and sound effects, designed by the Dutch film maker Peter Reijnders. The life size fairy tales, displayed together in a forest, proved to be an enormous success. In 1952, ...

| | | | Fairy: Encyclopedia II - Brothers Grimm - LinguisticsIn the very early 19th century, the time in which the Brothers Grimm lived, the Holy Roman Empire had just met its fate, and Germany as we know it today did not yet exist; it was basically an area of hundreds of principalities and small or mid-sized countries. The major unifying factor for the German people of the time was a common language. There was as yet no significant German literary history. So part of what motivated the brothers in their writings and in their lives wa ...

| | | | Fairy: Encyclopedia II - Efteling - The ParkEfteling currently covers approximately 160 acres (650,000 m²). This number changed only marginally over the course of the park's 50+ year history. The park's non-profit foundation and only shareholder (Stichting Natuurpark de Efteling) has a much larger area of land available though. Currently, this is mostly covered with young forests, some grassland, roads and an 18-hole golf course.
The park is divided into four 'themed areas' or 'realms', though one should not mistake these areas for something comparable to Disney's 'lands' ...

| | | | | | | Fairy: Encyclopedia II - Magic Discworld - Witch magicWitch magic is taught on a one-to-one basis by older witches to apprentices. Although magical talent tends to run in families, witches do not teach their daughters, feeling that this would cause a sort of magical inbreeding.
Witch magic is subtler than wizard magic, generally encouraging things that happen naturally or working on people's minds so that they impose the effects themselves (in fact, a good witch can do this without magic at all. This is called "headology"). As a result it is less energy intensive, which means that a witc ...

| | | | Fairy: Encyclopedia II - Magic Discworld - The Power of BeliefThis is very common on the Discworld, and is a useful "energy saver" in witch magic (and, to a lesser extent wizard magic). Essentially, if something is believed strongly enough, it is true. As mentioned above, witches often use this. For example, if you wish to turn a cat into a human, the easiest way is to convince him, on a deep level, that he is a human.
More significantly, it is also belief that gives the gods their powers. Discworld gods start off as tiny spirits, and gain power as they gain believers. This does not neces ...

| | | | Fairy: Encyclopedia II - Hans Christian Andersen - Life as an authorIn 1829, Andersen enjoyed a considerable success with a fantastic story entitled A Journey on Foot from Holmen's Canal to the East Point of Amager, and during the same season, he published both a farce and a collection of poems. His first success happened at a time when his friends had ultimately given up hope for him, deciding that his early eccentricity and vivacity would never lead to anything good. He had little further progress, however, until 1833, when he received a small travelling grant from the King, making the first of his long European journeys. At Le Locle, in the Jura, he wrote Agnet ...
