| ARTICLES RELATED TO Faith and Belief | | | | Faith and Belief: Too Much History Chokes the Child
A profound comment on history from an unknown source says, ''When you hear two eye-witness accounts of the same traffic accident, you grow suspicious about history''. History of several countries, since long, had been subjected to the Bed of Procrustes of ideologies and fancies; a fact bigger than the bed is cut to size and one shorter is stretched to fill it up. Yet something survives the operation. Despite omissions and exaggerations by the chroniclers, the time-spirit has culled out ideas from events or characters that have contributed to our understanding of the profundities and complexities of life, to the growth of our consciousness, both at the individual and collective planes.

| | | | Faith and Belief: Divinity's Endless Wait For Its Bhakt
Nothing captures the paradigmatic ambiguity of Hinduism - its liberating intellectual plurality and its equally restricting social construction - more than the life of the 14th century 'untouchable' saint-poet of western India, Chokhamela. The voice that speaks in his poetry is perhaps one of the first marginalised voices to be heard in the history of India. Chokhamela belonged to a community of devotees called the varkaris whose traditions and forms of worship survive in a practice that is an almost unbroken continuum from the late 13th century.

| | | | Faith and Belief: A Holistic Way of Doing Business
Today, there is a perceptible shift in the way business operates in the world - from a mechanistic and linear view to a more organic and holistic one. Decisions are more often peoplecentred. Business ethics have assumed importance. Corporates no longer search for the elusive 'best talent'; they are seeking ways to realise the best in existing talent.

| | | | Faith and Belief: Education is Key To Spirituality
We are schooled to know about our society and nature but not about ourselves, especially the nature of our mind and our spiritual potential. Even as adults and senior citizens, we remain ignorant of the mischievousness of our mind and the magnanimity of our heart. Our outward inquisitiveness is rarely turned inward, except at moments when we are struck by grief or crisis. Even those sombre moments do not kindle inward inquiry but leave us in sad quietude. Thus, we continue to be slaves rather than masters of the mind.

| | | | Faith and Belief: Man not Measure Of All Things
Man is no longer to be the measure of all things, the centre of the universe. He has been measured and found to be an undistinguished bit of matter, different in no essential way from bacteria, stones and trees. His goals and purposes, his egocentric notions of past, present and future; his faith in his power to predict and through prediction to control his destiny - all these are called into question, considered irrelevant, or deemed trivial.

| | | | Faith and Belief: A Few Bigots Hold Many to Ransom
It is paradoxical that while prophets and sages of all religions preached love, priests have often preached hatred of those who did not subscribe to their brand of God. Unfortunately, disrespect for another's faith whips up communal passions. Founders of various religions were simple and humble people. Buddha, Mahavir, Jesus, Prophet Mohammed, Guru Nanak and Krishna all promoted peace and harmony. None exhorted their followers to build temples, churches or mosques - these were created many centuries after the death of the founders.

| | | | Faith and Belief: Spiritual Approach To Development
Civilisation is defined by and founded upon the ideals and shared beliefs that weld society together. What uniquely defines the human experience is the transcendent component of life. It unlocks the creative capacities within our consciousness and safeguards human dignity. Pragmatic approaches to problem solving must play a central role in development initiatives. But equally, tapping the spiritual roots of human motivation provides the essential impulse that ensures genuine social advancement. When spiritual principles are fully integrated into community development activities, the ideas, insights and practical measures that emerge are more likely to promote self-reliance and preserve human honour.

| | | | Faith and Belief: Unleash Your Energy - Run With The Wolves
Today is International Women's Day. Around the world, in conferences and debates, ways to 'improve' women's lot and empower them will be discussed. They will remain a view from the outside unless we find a way to tune in to the spirit of the eternal feminine, and rediscover the creatrix that lies reduced to a vestigial place in our psyche after centuries of neglect. Today would be a good day to begin a renewal of this ancient relationship with our innate, instinctual, feminine self.

| | | | Faith and Belief: Yoga Of Action And World Cup Cricket
As children, we played a game simply because we enjoyed it. Slowly, sport has evolved into an investment opportunity. Take the Cricket World Cup for example. Sadly, as the players become more and more involved in the championship, they forget the play. In fact, play becomes work. Only when players enjoy playing, they can perform their best. When a man is truly happy and carefree, he can engage in incredible physical action. This is the main aspect of yoga for sport, that action can be performed without prior thought. With thought, intentions can be visible.

| | | | | Faith and Belief: Mystical Powers Of the Ganga
What makes a place sacred? A place where meditation is practised over many years automatically acquires certain powers. The place gets charged with the energy and vibrations from peaceful thoughts. Depending on the intensity of meditators, the sanctity and power of a particular place can thus remain charged, exuding powerful vibrations, for thousands of years. The Parshvanath Hills is one such place. Twenty-two of the 24 Jain Tirthankaras attained nirvana on this hill, and these enlightened persons were separated by thousands of years.

| | | | Faith and Belief: Scepticism in Ancient Vedic Literature
We want to believe in the existence of a higher agency but at the same time refuse to accept it. We take pride in our scepticism. Scepticism is a philosophical conception. Consistent scepticism is close to agnosticism. As doctrine we find the resonance of scepticism even in Vedic literature. In Greece it emerged as a reaction to the preceding philosophical systems which had tried to explain the sensual world by means of contemplative arguments and in so doing had often displayed inherent contradictions.

| | | | Faith and Belief: Impertinent Query, Profound Answer
" That is the essence of science: Ask an impertinent question and you are on the way to the pertinent answe r", wrote Dr J Bronowski in Ascent of Man. This statement is probably equally - or perhaps more - valid in our spiritual quests. The Kathopanishad starts with Nachiketa posing a question to his father Vajasravasa, who was giving away gifts after a Yagna .

| | | | Faith and Belief: A Very Special Shrine
It was like walking in to see a revered old friend, only to find her violated and left to die. I am talking about a Sufi shrine that breathed gently behind Humayun's tomb in Delhi which I discovered years ago. My mother had read about it in an obscure Urdu magazine and was struck by its miracle aura. The shrine, my mother told me, drew its strength from an 800-year-old tree under which a Sufi Baba meditated an entire lifetime... When he "went behind the veil" he was buried under that tree.

| | | | Faith and Belief: Women Need to Find Time to Meditate
Stress for working women is multi-dimensional. A normal working day means she works three shifts: at home, doing the morning chores before leaving for office, then at work in the office, and then again at home, helping children with their homework and doing the evening chores and putting together the family meal. A meditation teacher gave a brief introductory lecture about the need to keep one's mind focused with the help of pranayama breathing. "Meditation", she emphasised, "helps to make one become peaceful inside; this sense of peace would then spread to other members of your family and also in your workplace."

| | | | Faith and Belief: Surrender Yourself Unconditionally
The Vedas describe God as being Nirguna (free of qualities) and Niranjana (free of blemish). The Advaita philosophy founded by Adi Sankara explains this concept: "God or Brahman does not have any gunas or qualities". However, Ramanuja of the Vishishtadvaita philosophy explains that nirguna does not mean that God has no qualities, it only means that God has no bad gunas or qualities.

| | | | Faith and Belief: Savour & Preserve Eclectic Heritage
At the Baba Budan Hills in Karnataka, Muslims revere the shrine as their saint's, while Hindus revere him as Lord Dattatreya. The shrine's manager is Muslim. The Haji Malang shrine near Mumbai is managed by Hindus. Asia is the fusion of many cultures. Great periods of human history are marked by widespread access of spiritual vitality derived from the fusion of national cultures with foreign influences. So intertwined are our faiths that it is a terrible travesty when violence is carried out in the name of any one faith.

| | | | Faith and Belief: Identity And Form - A Sufi View
" The only thing necessary for evil to triumph ", wrote Edmund Burke, " is for good men to do nothing ". It is gratifying that in the midst of religious violence in the country many voices of resistance and sanity are being raised. The focus of this movement is promotion of tolerance and respect for diversity. However, I think something needs to be added to the "literary debate" about Islam, Hinduism and the problem of religious intolerance - namely, insight into the human mind's attachment to identity and fear of its loss.

| | | | Faith and Belief: Shraddha In God Works Wonders
Faith is a rare gift of God granted only to humans, and it forms the basis of human relationships. We need to repose faith in our parents that they will always think of our welfare; in our children that they will not let us down; in our colleagues and friends that they will remain loyal. Similarly, for a seeker of salvation, a prime requirement is faith or shraddha in God. Faith in people is based on our practical experience of them. We have no such experience of God. Does our faith in Him, therefore, have to be blind? As the following story illustrates, faith in God must be reasoned.
