The Global Oneness Festival: Encyclopedia II - List of Festivals in India - Zoroastrian

The Parsis account for less than 0.007% of the Indian population, but as Mahatma Gandhi said, they are "in number beneath contempt, but in contribution, beyond compare." The same could be said of their festivals. Unfortunately, like the Parsis themselves, these are private and celebrated primarily within the community. The Parsis use the Shahenshahi ("Imperial") version of the Zoroastrian calendar, which differs significantly from the Qadimi ("Ancient") version that their Iranian co-religionists use. For example, New Year is ce ...

The Global Oneness Festival: Encyclopedia II - Savonlinna Opera Festival - Origin

The birth of the Savonlinna Opera Festival ties in closely with the emerging Finnish identity and striving for independence at the beginning of the 20th century. Attending a nationalist meeting in Olavinlinna Castle in 1907, the Finnish soprano Aino Ackté, already famous at opera houses the world over and an ardent patriot, immediately spotted the potential of the castle as the venue for an opera festival. The first opera festival was held in 1912. Aino Ackté directed the festival for five summers, staging four Finnish operas. The only opera by a non-Finnish composer was Charles Gounod’s Faust, with Ackt ...

Bon Odori (盆踊り, meaning simply Bon dance) is an event held during Obon. It is celebrated as a reminder of the gratefulness one should feel toward one's ancestors. The O-Bon festival is observed all over the country. The Global Oneness Festival: Encyclopedia II - Powder Ridge Rock Festival - The festival scene

Drugs were openly sold and commonly consumed at the festival. The famed rock doctor William Abruzzi (also at Woodstock) was there to treat bad LSD trips, and said there were more bad trips at Powder Ridge per capita than at any other music festival he'd ever worked. He attributed some of the problems to the barrels of "electric water" that were available for free public consumption; people were invited to drop donations of drugs into these barr ...

The Global Oneness Festival: Encyclopedia II - FM4 Frequency Festival - History

The festival was established in 2001. The first year it took place as a rather small event featuring six artists on each of the two days of the festival, which were Friday, the 8th and Saturday, the 9th of June. Musicnet, the company that organizes the Frequency festival, rented the open air stage of the Arena Wien, one of Vienna's leading concert locations. The festival, called Vienna City Festival at that time, became an instant success - not only financially, but it was also very much liked by the audience. This quickly lead to the decision of moving it to another loca ...

Mid-Autumn Festival - Hou Yi and Chang'e. While Westerners may talk about the "man in the moon", the Chinese talk about the "woman on the moon". The story of Chang E, and her flight to the moon, is familiar to every Chinese, and a favourite subject of poets. The Global Oneness Festival: Encyclopedia II - Ashton Court Festival - History

The first festival was held in 1974, and the event grew steadily through the 1970s. After a large number of arrests on site in 1980, the festival was not held again until 1983, when it was a one-day event; in 1984 a de facto two-day event was created by staging it back-to-back with a one-day WOMAD event. Since then it has grown increasingly popular. For several years it was claimed to be Europe's biggest free festival; however, the "suggested minimum donation" for entry has now become a compulsory UK£6 entry fee for adults. The Global Oneness Festival: Encyclopedia II - Westheimer Street Festival - History

The Westheimer Street Festival originated on Westheimer Road in the Montrose neighborhood. The moving of the festival was the source of great controversy. It wasn't until the mid-1990s when residents of inner loop neighborhoods, that is, communities located inside Loop 610 in Houston, forced the WestFest to relocate right after the Houston City Council passed a street closure ordinance authored by Houston City Councilmembers Annise Parker and Chris Bell in June 1999. Residents became tired of the noise, disruption and drunkeness which ...

The Global Oneness Festival: Encyclopedia II - Utah Shakespearean Festival - History

The Festival was founded in 1961 by Fred C. Adams. After a stint in the New York theatre scene, he made his way to Cedar City and realized the potential for such a venture in the area, hoping to draw on the 150,000 or so tourists that come to the area's National Parks in the summer. He subsequently traveled to Ashland, Oregon to observe the operations of the Oregon Shakespeare Festival, which is often regarded as one of the foremost festivals in the world. While in Ashland, Adams met and i ...

In 1989, Mean Fiddler got involved for the first time. The festival started to change, leading towards its re-establishment in the 1990s as one of the U.K.'s biggest music festivals. Notably, the new indie music of this decade started to appear on the bill and the future of the festival became more secure. In 1991 Nirvana played the first of their two appearances to a massive crowd. They returned following year as headliners, playing live in Britain for the last time. This is also the year the first britpop bands such as Suede and Blu ...
