God And Religion Dictionary: A Christian Theological Dictionary on Image of God

A Christian theological definition of Image of God according to CARM - The Christian Apologetics & Research Ministry:

"

Image of God

Man was made in the image of God (Gen. 1:26).

The image of God is generally held to mean that people contain within their nature elements that reflect God's nature: compassion, reason, love, hate, patience, kindness, self-awareneness, etc. Though we have a physical image, it does not mean that God has one. Rather, God is spirit (John 4:24), not flesh and bones (Luke 24:39).

God And Religion Dictionary: Encyclopedia II - Philosophy of religion - What is God?

The question "What is God?" is sometimes also phrased as "What is the meaning of the word 'God'?" Most philosophers expect some sort of definition as an answer to this question, but they are not content simply to describe the way the word is used: they want to know the essence of what it means to be God. Western philosophers typically concern themselves with the God of monotheistic religions (see the nature of God in Western theology), but discussions also c ...

Religion (see etymology below) —sometimes used interchangeably with faith or belief system—is commonly defined as belief concerning the supernatural, sacred, or divine; and the moral codes, practices, values, institutions and rituals associated with such belief. God And Religion Dictionary: Encyclopedia - Bel god

Bel, signifying "lord" or "master", is a title rather than a genuine name, applied to various gods in Babylonian religion. The feminine form is Belit 'Lady, Mistress'. Bel is represented in Greek and Latin by Belos and Belus respectively. Linguistically Bel is an east Semitic form cognate with northwest Semitic Ba‘al which has the same meaning. Early translators of Akkadian believed that the ideogram for the god called in Sumerian Enlil was to be read as Bel in Akkadian. This i ...

God And Religion Dictionary: Encyclopedia II - Abrahamic religions on God and gender - Jewish views of God and gender

In regard to translating Hebrew names of God into English, most Orthodox Jews and many Conservative Jews hold that it is wrong to use English female pronouns for God; their reason is not because God is of the male gender, but because doing so among English speakers tends to draw attention to God as having gender. Another reason is that the Hebrew Bible usually uses names of God that are grammatically masculine. Among many Reconstructionist Jews and Reform Jews there has been an increasing tendency to stress feminine characteristics of ...

God And Religion Dictionary: Encyclopedia II - Creator God - Abrahamic religions

Christianity, Judaism, and Islam teach that Creation is the origin of the totality of the omniverse by the action of God. Even more particularly, every type of existence is also owing to the act of creation by God. Among monotheists it has historically been most commonly believed that living things are the God's creations, and are not the result of a process inherent in originally non-living things, unless this process is designed, initiated, or directed by God; likewise, sentient and intelligent beings are God's creation, and did not arise through the development of living but non- ...

God And Religion Dictionary: Encyclopedia II - Abrahamic religions on God and gender - Translating the names of God into English

There are a number of ways that one can translate the names of God into English from Hebrew. The Tetragrammaton is composed of the Hebrew letters Yod-Heh-Waw-Heh. (If your web-browser supports a Hebrew font it is written thus: יהוה.) In English the tetragrammaton is usually written as YHWH or YHVH. The original meaning of this form is connected with the "I AM" of Exodus 3:14 (and it probably contains a Hebrew masculine verb prefix). This word is usually rendered into English by translating Hebrew Adon ...

God And Religion Dictionary: Encyclopedia II - Abrahamic religions on God and gender - Christian views of God and gender

In Christianity, one person of God, the Son, is believed to have become incarnate as a human male. Most Christians believe that the other two persons in the trinity, the Father and the Holy Spirit, have never been incarnated. Female terms for the Holy Spirit were used in some early Christian communities, specifically within the hymn book, entitled "Odes of Solomon". The Biblical Hebrew word for spirit is ruah, meaning wind, breath, inspiration; the noun is grammatically feminine. In the "Odes of Solomon'; the oldest surviving C ...

God And Religion Dictionary: Encyclopedia II - Abrahamic religions on God and gender - Criticism of feminine reconstructions of theology

Grammatically, most of the Hebrew names for God are masculine; a few are grammatically feminine; the grammatical form of words has no biological or literal significance. Many modern readers of the Bible, especially those influenced by 20th century feminism, often misread English translations of the Bible as literal translations of the Hebrew text; this leads to errors of understanding, as for grammatical reasons literal translations are not always possible. English does not have grammatical gender in nou ...

God And Religion Dictionary: Encyclopedia II - The Nation of Gods and Earths - Five Percent Nation philosophies versus mainstream religion

While the Nation of Gods and Earths uses many terms that are similar to those used by traditional Muslims (such as Allahu Akbar, etc) and have a few individuals among them who refer to themselves as Muslims, the Five Percenters and traditional Muslims have very little in common. While Five Percenters do not eat pork, they do not follow traditional Islamic teachings based on the laws written in the Qur'an or Muhammad’s Sunnah, such as prescribed clothing, prayer rituals, prohibitions against smoking, drinking, and other recommendations or r ...

God And Religion Dictionary: Encyclopedia II - Existence of God - What is God? Definition of God's existence

What does it mean to assert "God exists"? In this context, the term "God" has typically been used to mean the monotheistic concept of a singular Supreme Being. One common definition of God assumes some combination of qualities such as omnipotence, omniscience and benevolence. This definition is not the only possible definition of "god". Many polytheistic religions have given the name "god" to several beings, all of whose existence is posited by these faiths. Mythologies affirm that these gods have various agendas, can tr ...

God And Religion Dictionary: Encyclopedia II - God the Father - God the Father in monotheism

In two of the three major forms of monotheism, Judaism and Christianity, God is called the Father in part because he is thought to take an active interest in human affairs, in the way that a father would take an interest in his children. Thus, many monotheists believe they can communicate with him through prayer, either to praise him or to affect his behavior. They expect that as a Father, he will respond to humanity, his children, acting in our best interests, even punishing those who misbehave like a father punishes his children, to restor ...
