List of British Jews: Encyclopedia - Alicia Markova

Dame Alicia Markova DBE (1 December 1910 – 2 December 2004) was an English prima ballerina. She was born Lillian Alicia Marks to well-off parents in the Finsbury Park district of London. At the age of eight, Marks was given ballet lessons to correct supposed problems with her legs and feet. She was soon spotted by Russian impresario Sergei Diaghilev, who wanted her to dance in his Ballets Russes. Marks joined Diaghilev in Monte Carlo at the age of 14, and toured all over Europe. It was Diaghilev who "Russified" her name to Alicia Markova to avoid a then current p ...

List of British Jews: Encyclopedia II - Peter Taylor Baron Taylor of Gosforth - Famous cases

Taylor attracted attention from 1973 when he appeared for the prosecution in several cases connected to the corrupt architect John Poulson, including that of Poulson himself. Over the next three years, the prosecutions succeeded and many of those involved were jailed. In 1974, Taylor successfully prosecuted Judith Ward who was convicted of a series of IRA bombings (many years later, the conviction was found to have been a miscarriage of justice, mostly through Ward's delusions of her own guilt). Taylor also took on John Ryman, a fellow Barrister and Labour Member of Parliament for Blyt ...

List of British Jews: Encyclopedia II - Peter Mandelson - Early life

Mandelson was born in London in 1953 and educated at Hendon County Grammar School (now Hendon School). He is the grandson of Herbert Morrison, the London County Council leader and Labour cabinet minister. In his youth, he briefly rebelled against his family's Labour tradition and in 1971 left the Labour Party Young Socialists (LPYS) to join the Young Communist League, then the youth wing of the Communist Party of Great Britain. This move was partly a result of disagreements with the Trotskyist Militant Tendency that had just won a majority i ...

List of British Jews: Encyclopedia II - Peter Taylor Baron Taylor of Gosforth - Court of Appeal

In 1988 Taylor was promoted to the Court of Appeal. There he became known to the public when he was commissioned by the government to undertake an inquiry into the Hillsborough disaster of 1989. He was an appropriate choice as he had been a lifelong supporter of Newcastle United F.C. and had spent many Saturdays on the terraces during his youth. The Taylor Report led to the introduction of all-seater stadiums and the removal of fences around fans sitting areas. Taylor's popularity as a former Chairman of the Bar Council and as a fair ...

Where Lane had been extremely reticent about giving interviews, Taylor was determined to be as open as possible. Not only did he start his tenure by holding an unprecedented press conference, he appeared as a guest on BBC television's Question Time and as a castaway on Desert Island Discs. Within a few months of taking over he accepted an invitation to give the annual Dimbleby Lecture on "The judiciary in the nineties" in which he cast him ...

List of British Jews: Encyclopedia II - Peter Mandelson - Second resignation

In January 2001, it was claimed that Mandelson had phoned Home Office minister Mike O'Brien on behalf of Srichand Hinduja, an Indian businessman who was seeking British citizenship, and whose family firm was to become the main sponsor of the "Faith Zone" in the Millennium Dome. At the time, Mr. Hinduja and his brothers were under investigation by the Indian government for alleged involvement in the Bofors scandal. On 24 January 2001, Mandelson resigned from the government for a second time, insisting he had done nothing wrong. An independent enquiry by Sir Anthony Hammond came to the conclusion that n ...

List of British Jews: Encyclopedia II - Peter Taylor Baron Taylor of Gosforth - Judge

Taylor had been first appointed a Recorder (part-time Judge) in 1969 and served as a Recorder in the Crown Court from 1972. After serving as Chairman of the Bar Council for 1979-80, he was made a full High Court Judge on the Queen's Bench Division (following a tradition, since abandoned, that the Bar Chairman receive such an appointment). One of his first cases saw him give Bromley London Borough Council permission to challenge the Greater London Council's "Fare's Fair" policy of lowering public transport fares. In 1983 Taylor held that a Pakistani man who had pronounced Talaq and notified the authorities ...

List of British Jews: Encyclopedia II - Peter Mandelson - Work with Tony Blair

Disappointingly for Mandelson, he had little influence over John Smith during his leadership of the Labour Party, although he made several notable speeches in which his strong support for the European Union was outlined. He was close to two Shadow Cabinet members, Gordon Brown and Tony Blair, who were regarded as potential leaders. After Smith's sudden death in 1994, Mandelson decided to back Blair for the leadership and had a leading, though unannounced, role in the leadership campaign. This created lasting antagonism bet ...

List of British Jews: Encyclopedia II - Peter Mandelson - European Commission

Accepting that, despite his exoneration by the Hammond Inquiry, a reappointment to the Cabinet was not a practical possibility, Mandelson made no secret of wanting a job as the United Kingdom's European Commissioner when the new Commission was established in 2004 (both of Britain's incumbents, Neil Kinnock and Chris Patten, were standing down). Appointment as a Commissioner would mean a by-election in his constituency which might prove to be difficult for the Labour Party to win, but Mandelson argued persuasively that the seat could be held. ...

List of British Jews: Encyclopedia II - Peter Mandelson - First resignation

In December 1998 it was revealed that Mandelson had bought a home in Notting Hill in 1996 with the assistance of an interest-free indefinite loan of £373,000 from Geoffrey Robinson, a millionaire Labour MP who was also in the government but was subject to an inquiry into his business dealings by Mandelson's department. Given Mandelson's closeness to Tony Blair, this gave the appearance of buying favours. Although Mandelson had deliberately not taken part in any decisions relating to Robinson, he knew he should have declared the loan as an i ...

List of British Jews: Encyclopedia II - Peter Mandelson - Cabinet post

In 1998 Mandelson joined the Cabinet as Secretary of State for Trade and Industry. In his brief tenure of the post he gained the respect of the trade unions for consulting with them. During his few months in the job, he was the centre of a great deal of media attention when Matthew Parris (openly gay former MP and then Parliamentary sketchwriter of The Times) mentioned during a live interview on Newsnight, in the wake of the resignation of Ron Davies, that "Peter Mandelson is certainly gay". Mandelson's homosexuality had been w ...
