Spirituality and Science | Wisdom Archive on Science and Spirituality | | Science and Spirituality Spirituality and Science is seen by many as two separate things.
What we normally call Science is that which we can measure, see and prove. From that perspective, Spirit is maybe the last thing to find in any microscope. The science of Spirituality is maybe not so easily measured from the parameters used in normal science.
The marriage of science and spirituality is very exiting and this topic will be presented at this page and at the Oneness Festival.
In many religious traditions God is seen as infinite, all powerful, perfect and beyond change and growth. In stark contrast the universe is evolving an ever expanding consciousness often through excruciatingly painful struggles. Our mathematical and scientific understanding suggests God is an unfolding creative process that may expand without limit. In that framework we are the eyes of God with the power to create the world. We are the evolution of consciousness becoming aware of itself and beginning to acquire the power to take conscious control of evolution.

God initiated the universe, He created it. But we change the world too. Therefore, we have a responsibility; we have to ensure that we change it for the better. Take cloning, for instance. We humans are co-creators. How we go about cloning depends on whether we're doing it for the common good. It raises many complex and difficult questions. We are changing all the time. So instead of imposing a total ban on creative research, it is better to regulate it carefully.

| | | | Spirituality and Science: Spiritual Approach To Development
Civilisation is defined by and founded upon the ideals and shared beliefs that weld society together. What uniquely defines the human experience is the transcendent component of life. It unlocks the creative capacities within our consciousness and safeguards human dignity. Pragmatic approaches to problem solving must play a central role in development initiatives. But equally, tapping the spiritual roots of human motivation provides the essential impulse that ensures genuine social advancement. When spiritual principles are fully integrated into community development activities, the ideas, insights and practical measures that emerge are more likely to promote self-reliance and preserve human honour.

| | | | Spirituality and Science: Implicit Faith In A Supreme Power
Carried away by the triumphs of science, many people repudiate God's existence. They dispute anything which is not empirically verifiable. But as former president S Radhakrishnan said: "Science looks at the periphery, at the outside of things, the variety and multiplicity of the universe. The centre of being from which all these things come, from which they arise - that must be felt by solitary meditation."

| | | | Spirituality and Science: Finding Answers In The Mystic's Lab
Since the beginning, human beings have sought answers to spiritual questions, motivated by a basic urge to understand the meaning of life. Our search for answers has led us to believe in a divine being. This belief in divine power dominated world thought until about 500 years ago when scientific discoveries and innovations began to shake our faith in God. But science also proved to be a false god, leaving many in despair,

| | | | | Spirituality and Science: Physics And Vedanta - So much in common
Recent scientific discoveries seem to validate the concept of Brahman . Physicists and cosmologists are close to proving that there is one source behind the physical universe, and they call this source the unified field. In a profound sense, Brahman , the Vedantic concept and the unified field of physics appear to be synonymous. All the physical objects and phenomena around us are not illusory or maya, but are quite real. However, what we see is only the tip of the iceberg. Underneath it is the interplay of an abstract substance called energy, which in turn is controlled by something even more abstract:

| | | | Spirituality and Science: Big Bang Theory In Ancient India
Long before modern science came up with the idea of the Big Bang, India’s Sphota Vada said just what the Big Bang model says - that creation was born of one initial explosion. Swami Vivekananda sums up the Indian Sphota Vada thus : “ Brahman first manifested itself as Sound, and then as Form. Sensible universe is the Form behind which stands the eternal inexpressible Sphota , the essential eternal material of all ideas or names. Sphota , the manifester as Logos or Word, is the power through which the Lord creates the universe. The Lord first becomes conditioned as the Sphota and then evolves himself as the more concrete sensible universe. In other words, Sphota is the fore- father of all ideas, it is their common basis and even the essence. If all the peculiarities which distinguish one word from another is removed, then what remains would be the Sphota.’’

| | | | Spirituality and Science: Significant Gravity Of Deep Thought
Swiss scientists have recently discovered that sending a very weak current to the back of the right side of the brain triggered an out-of-body experience (OBE) for the patient. This OBE could be produced at will whenever a particular part of the brain was stimulated by an electric current. OBE is also one of the major outcomes of yoga and is mentioned in the vibhuti pad of Patanjali's Yoga Darshan . Naturally a yogi has to practise years of tapasya or meditation before she can achieve an OBE and sense of levitation. Interestingly, technology seems to allow this pleasurable experience quite easily.

| | | | | Spirituality and Science: Physics of Nirvana - Link Two Realities
The Vedas describe an ultimate reality, which they call Brahman . The awareness of this 'reality' is attained through the practice of yoga and meditation. " Aham Brahmasmi " (I am Brahman) - is the statement of this realisation and identification, which is synonymous with the concept of nirvana. Conceptions of Brahman and nirvana are integral to the different schools of Indian and Buddhist philosophy. However, untill recently, they had not been subject to scientific scrutiny. Physicists have discovered that the various quantum fields , which underlie all physical reality, arise from one common source, namely, the unified field. Our goal here is to show an overall connection between two primary realities - the unified field and consciousness.

| | | | Spirituality and Science: Can Consciousness Be Reduced To Matter?
Francis Crick, the co-discoverer of the DNA, presented what he called the “Astonishing Hypothesis”: Human behaviour is merely the sum of a vast assembly of nerve cells and their associated molecules. But, can human consciousness be explained in physical terms? Those who embrace challenge the validity of Crick’s astonishing hypothesis. Scientists, however, claim that mind and consciousness are only a pack of neurons, made up of a chain of lifeless molecules and atoms. Therefore, it can be fully explained in terms of “lower level sciences” of chemistry and physics.

| | | | | | Spirituality and Science: Vedanta's Version Of the Big Bang
In vedanta, the second capsule of the Brahma Sutras is the most fundamental, cardinal, sacrosanct, and is also the most famous. Janmadyasya yatah - Brahman is that from which the birth and the evolution of the universe follow. It says Brahman is that ultimate 'world’ which we gain access to by distilling the world down to its inmost content, or the furthest stop from where we get off by travelling backwards in time-space. Astronomical observations have confirmed more or less beyond doubt that stars, galaxies and clusters of super galaxies are receding from the earth and from one another. The clinching evidence comes from the Doppler Effect or the Red Shift. The shift in the spectral lines towards the longer wavelengths identified by the red colour in the spectrum confirms that the source of light is moving and is not at rest.

| | | | Spirituality and Science: Scientific Heritage Of Jain Philosophy
Although ancient Jain scientific thought is not so well known, it is a rich source of Indian scientific heritage. The grand Jain spiritual tradition and its masters broadly influenced Indian thought and rationality in three key areas: Atomism, non-absolutism and mathematical concepts including the theory of numbers: As realists, a satisfactory explanation for the origin of the material world was important to Jain philosophers. Karma, according to the Jains, is paudgalika or of material nature. By its linkages with body and thus with the outer world, the soul is literally penetrated with material particles of a very subtle kind.

| | | | Spirituality and Science: The Hi-tech Route To Reach Nirvana
With technology and the Internet, it might just be possible to witness a lot more Buddhas and Sankaras taking shape. Recent scientific evidence suggests that human beings are wired to think about spiritual matters once their basic needs are met. Technology allows us to take care of our basic needs so that a large number of people can focus on higher, spiritual matters. It also allows rapid information dissemination and generates debate and discussion, thus facilitating communion with higher thought. Technological progress also unravels a lot of hidden areas and shows how nature performs its miracles. In doing this, technology helps us understand the power and greatness of nature. For instance, we thought we'd invented and developed fibre optics. Scientists, however, find that the root systems of plants are excellent optical fibres - and they've existed in nature for millions of years.

| | | | | Spirituality and Science: The Eternal Query - Just Who Are We?
Erwin Schrodinger, father of quantum-wave mechanics declared that the one and only task of science is to answer the one philosophical question: 'Who are we?' In the Kathopanishad, Nachiketa requests Jamaraja: "Please give me knowledge of the Self." Whether extrovert or introvert, for those who go deep into their respective fields of knowledge, a single, universal enigma incessantly and insistently surfaces at the very core: What is the nature of the observer of the field? And, for many scientists and intellectuals, the answer has remained elusive. In The Astonishing Hypothesis - The Scientific Search for the Soul, Nobel laureate Francis Crick admits in the very opening sentence, "The mystery of consciousness... at the present time... is far too difficult to explain."

Islamic View of Creation & Life
According to Islamic tradition, life
is God's creation - regardless of whether life was specially created or
resulted from evolution. Evolution itself is a process of creation as admitted
by Darwin in The Origin of Species.
Creation falls into four categories -
inanimate matter, plants, animals and human beings. According to Islam, all
four are separate creations. Among living things, a number of species co-exist,
all having been created separately. There is doubtless some similarity in
physical attributes; yet, each has a permanent, separate existence. There is no
concept of a missing link in Islam.
