This disk is situated in the branches of the world tree, or Yggdrasil. Asgard, where the gods lived, was located at the centre of the disc, and could only be reached by walking across the rainbow (the Bifröst bridge). The Giants lived in an abode called Jötunheimr (giant realm).
A cold, dark underground abode called Niflheim was ruled by Hel, daughter of Loki. According to the Prose Edda this was the eventual dwelling-place of mos ...

In spite of the fact that the peasants had elected Haakon king at the Ting they opposed his religious ideas.
It was an old custom, that when there was to be sacrifice all the bon ...

In 1388, at the request of the Swedes themselves, Albert was driven out by Queen Margaret of Denmark and at a convention of the representatives of the three Scandinavian kingdoms (held at Kalmar in 1397), Margaret's great-nephew, Eric of Pomerania, was elected the common king, although the liberties of each of the three realms were expressly reserved and confirmed. The union was to be a personal, not a political union. Neither Margaret herself nor her successors observed the stipulation that in each of th ...

| | | | Uppsala: Encyclopedia II - University of Tartu - BuildingsThe University’s four museums, its Botanical Gardens, and sports facilities are, by and large, open to the general public. The University possesses some 150 buildings, 30 of which are outside of Tartu. 31 of its buildings decorate the city as architectural monuments. However, the current reforms include attempts to sell, or have the state co-sponsor, several of these buildings and monuments, as well as sports facilities, as they are not seen as part of the university's mission proper.
At the same time, there are numerous recently constructed/renovated university buildings and student dormitories, such as th ...

| | | | Uppsala: Encyclopedia II - International E-road network - SignageThe European routes are signposted with a green number sign like this:
There are different strategies for determining how frequently to signpost the roads.
Sweden, Norway and Denmark have integrated the E-road numbers into their networks, meaning that the roads usually have no other national number.
In most of the countries the E-roads form a network on top of the national network. The green signs are frequent enough to show how to follow the roads, but do not usually show how to reach them.
In some coun ...

| | | | Uppsala: Encyclopedia II - Foundation of modern Sweden - Eric XIVMain article: Eric XIV of Sweden
Events were already occurring which ultimately compelled Sweden to depart from her neutrality and lay the foundations of an overseas empire. In the last year of Gustav’s life, 1560, the ancient Livonian Order, amalgamated since 1237 with the more powerful Teutonic Order, had by the secularization of the latter order into the dukedom of Prussia, 1525, become suddenly isolated in the midst of hostile Slavonians. It needed but a jolt to bring down the crazy anachronism, and the jolt came when, in 1558-1560, floods of Muscovites poured over th ...

| | | | Uppsala: Encyclopedia II - Christian II of Denmark - The Stockholm BloodbathOn November 4, he was anointed by Gustavus Trolle in Stockholm Cathedral, and took the usual oath to rule the Realm through native-born Swedes alone, according to prescription. The next three days were given up to banqueting, but on November 7 "an entertainment of another sort began." On the evening of that day Christian summoned his captains to a private conference at the palace, the result of which was quickly apparent, for at dusk a band of Danish soldiers, with lanterns and torches, broke into ...

| | | | Uppsala: Encyclopedia II - Christian II of Denmark - Reconquest of SwedenMeanwhile Christian was preparing for the inevitable war with Sweden, where the patriotic party, headed by the freely elected Viceroy Sten Sture the Younger, stood face to face with the pro-Danish party under Archbishop Gustav Trolle.
Christian, who had already taken measures to isolate Sweden politically, hastened to the relief of the archbishop, who was beleaguered in his fortress of Stäket, but was defeated by Sture and his peasant levies at Vedila and forced to return to Denmark. A second attempt to subdue Sweden in 1518 was also ...

| | | | | | Uppsala: Encyclopedia II - Ture Nerman - The Last YearsTure Nerman had a seat in the parliament 1946 – 1953. He retired from politics after that, 67-years-old. The rest of his life Ture Nerman lived quietly with his family. He had a house on an island in the Stockholm archipelago and he still kept the red Soviet flag with the hammer and the sickle outside his house. But after the Second World War, Nerman had a very positive view towards America and great hopes for the United Nations, and he even became an advocate of Swedish membership in NATO. He died in 1969.
