| | | | Uppsala: Encyclopedia II - Ture Nerman - Political AwakeningThe year 1905 saw both a revolution in Russia and revolutionary development in Scandinavia as Norway declared itself independent from the rule of the Swedish crown. These changes radicalized Ture Nerman politically to the left. He had already started reading August Strindberg, Leo Tolstoy and Ellen Key. Soon he would discover Karl Marx (even if it took many years until he fully started to study and understand Marxism). Nerman st ...

| | | | Uppsala: Encyclopedia II - Dan king - The Gesta DanorumSaxo Grammaticus in his Gesta Danorum presents three different Danish monarchs named Dan, either splitting up a single monarch into many, or properly keeping separate what others have confused.
Saxo begins his history with two brothers named Dan and Angul, sons of one Humbli, who were made rulers by the consent of the people because of their bravery. They were not however called "kings", as that usage was not then common.
Angul is the eponym of the region of Angul and from his people eventually came the English who gave their name to England. Dan fath ...

| | | | Uppsala: Encyclopedia II - Early Swedish history - 10th centuryThe Swedish vikings also played a role in the west during the later Viking Age. This first occurred during the conquest of England under the Danish kings Svein Forkbeard and his son Cnut from 1007-1013. Swedes, along with Norwegians, were recruited as mercenaries to participate in this conquest. Indeed, there is at least one rune stone monument in Sweden attesting to a warrior who won much booty during one of these English campaigns. Later on, Swedes were recruited by the infamous King Harald III of Norway (Harald Hardrada), to help h ...

| | | | Uppsala: Encyclopedia II - Ture Nerman - Against StalinismTure Nerman condemned the rise of Stalinism in Russia, but when Zeth Höglund broke with the Communist Party in 1924, Ture Nerman remained, although less involved in the leadership. The party's new leadership was composed of Karl Kilbom and Nils Flyg, both Moscow friendly, however none of them real Stalinist.
In 1929 the Comintern made sure that the power of the Swedish Communist Party was taken over by the minority fraction of Stalinists lead by Hugo Sillén. The majority of the party’s members, the non-Stalinists, were expe ...

| | | | Uppsala: Encyclopedia II - Yngling - NamesIn the Scandinavian sources they are the descendants of Yngvi-Frey of Vanaheim. Yngling means descendant of Frey and in Gesta Danorum they are called the sons of Frey.
In Beowulf appear several of these kings Eadgils (Adils), Onela (Ale) and Ohthere (Ottar Vendelkråka), but here they are called Scylfings (see section below). Snorri Sturluson hints at a less divine origin in Skáldskaparmál for this dynasty: One war-king was named Skelfir; and his house is called the House of Skilfings: his kindred is in the Eastern Region (Sweden is the eastern part of Scandinavia and the Swedish kings co ...
