Social Studies Dictionary - Amendment 19 Definition and meaning of Amendment 19 Amendment 19, 24 and 26 - [Social Studies] The first step in the process to create equal rights for women was to seek suffrage, or the right to vote. In the 1840s women spoke in public meetings calling for equal rights for women. Suffrage was extended to women in the Wyoming territory in 1869, and when it became a state in 1890 it was the first which allowed women the vote. Three other states which joined the United States in the 1890s likewise granted suffrage to women. These were Colorado, Idaho, and Utah. Yet, the 19th Amendment which extended the right to vote to women in federal or state elections was not ratified until 1920. The 24th Amendment, ratified in 1964, eliminated the poll tax as a prerequisite to vote in national elections. The 26th Amendment, ratified in 1971, lowered the official voting age to 18, thereby allowing a greater percentage of U.S. citizens to participate in the process of government.
